Altered Auditory Feedback (AAF) is a collective term for Delayed
Auditory Feedback (DAF), Frequency Altered Feedback (FAF) and
masking.
It is well known that when People Who Stammer (PWS) talk in unison
with fluent speakers they become fluent. The concept of 'second
speech' is produced by the device via a tiny microphone &
headset and this in turn promotes fluency.
Some 10 years of research has clearly demonstrated that the use
of FAF or DAF during reading, results in a reduction in stammering
for most PWS. One can expect a reduction in stammering of 40%
to 85%.
The VA601i units are shipped with a variety of optimal settings
pre-installed. These settings allow a user to explore the setting
that works best for them. Further calibration, using a PC and
in conjunction with a Speech Therapist can enhance the effectiveness
of the device. Once the optimum settings have been established,
the settings are stored on the device.
The user can adjust and fine-tune the settings using a PC or
using the controls on the device to select different programs.
Several modes can be selected on the device itself; this allows
for varying surroundings and background noise levels. VoiceAmp
has also devised an additional in-ear solution that allows transparency
in the wearing of the device.
VoiceAmp have devised a self-assessment program whereby a user
can test the effectiveness of a device using a software package
and a USB cable.
A self assessment questionnaire and reading evaluation can be
emailed to VoiceAmp Labs for analysis. This will help people without
access to a Speech Therapist to establish the optimal settings
for a device.
Professional help and support is always advised, as these are
assistive devices and not miracle cures. Young children do respond
to these devices, but we do not recommend that assistive devices
are used to replace therapy and ultimately parents should consult
professional advice if they are unsure. VoiceAmp have invested
heavily in training Speech Therapists in the calibration and fitting
of these devices.
Stammering is a highly individual disorder and the settings and
effectiveness may vary considerably from person to person. Ultimately,
trying a device is the only sure way to test the effectiveness
of this technology.
VoiceAmp are able to provide examples of fluency improvement
from others with similar conditions and we strive to continue
developing our technology to help as many people as possible.
This diagram demonstrates how the modified speech pattern is
played back to the speaker via a tiny headset as they are talking,
thus improving their fluency.
